What is Urban planning?

Urban planning is a field that focuses on the development and design of land use and the built environment, as well as policy processes. Infrastructure, transportation, and communication networks, both within and outside of cities, and their accessibility. Urban planning traditionally follows a top-down approach to layout settlements. It focuses on public welfare, including efficiency, hygiene, environmental protection, and socio-economic impact. Over time, urban planning has prioritized social and environmental aspects, aiming to improve people’s health and well-being while upholding sustainability standards. Sustainable development became a key goal in planning during the late 20th century due to the identified drawbacks of previous models. Jane Jacobs’s writings encouraged urban planners to consider residents’ experiences and needs in planning, effectively influencing them to do so. Shorten this text.
